Millicent's costume

A production without set and costumes is, well frankly a radio play - wonderful in its way but not enough one off the sofa and into the warm embrace of a darkened theatre venue.

The costumes for Lady Ottoline Morrell and Millicent Fawcett are an immensely valuable part of this production of Across the Square, giving the audience visual clues about two vastly different women each with their own distinct world view.

Our production designer is internationally award-winning Eve Oakley. We asked her about her work on Across the Square.

 "The play presents a wonderful challenge for design: how to convey the scale and complexity of such a turbulent period in history, distilled into a single interior location - Millicent’s front room at 2 Gower Street. Yet as the script reaches far beyond those walls, the space I created needed to feel both domestic and expansive.

In creating costumes for Ottoline and Millicent, I have been able to draw on many archival photographs and some of Ottoline’s garments that survive to this day. It has been a joyful process of recreating pre-existing items whilst having the creative freedom to dream up new details to bring these two distinct and sharply contrasting women to life.”
